About Hon. Umar Yusuf Yabo

Umar Yusuf Yabo is a Nigerian politician and member of the House of Representatives, representing the Yabo/Shagari Federal Constituency in Sokoto State in the 10th National Assembly. He holds the traditional title Danmaje Yabo, also written Danmajen Yabo.

He was first returned for the constituency in 2023 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, following a contested election. A presidential election tribunal declined his election in July 2024 and ordered a rerun; the Court of Appeal set that judgment aside in August 2024 and upheld his victory, which Daily Trust reported as the appeal court setting aside the tribunal judgment and upholding the PDP candidate’s win.

Hon. Umar Yusuf Yabo believes that public office is, first and foremost, a responsibility to the people.

Approach to office

Leadership Through Service. Representation With Purpose.

The member sets out his understanding of the office in his own terms. What follows is his account of the purpose of the role, and is presented as his position rather than as an independently verified account of completed work.

01 — Public office

Public office as a responsibility

As the representative of the people of Yabo/Shagari Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, he understands that the issues that matter most to his constituents are often simple and immediate: access to good healthcare, better schools, roads that connect communities, opportunities for young people, support for farmers, and the basic services that allow families to live and work with dignity.

That is why staying close to the people remains an important part of his approach to public service.

He listens to the concerns raised by communities, engages with constituents, and works through the responsibilities of his office to support projects and initiatives that can make a practical difference. His work is not only about what happens in Abuja. It is also about what happens back home, in the towns and villages of Yabo and Shagari.

02 — Trust

A commitment to his people

Hon. Umar Yusuf Yabo sees representation as more than a position or a title. It is a trust given by the people.

That trust comes with the responsibility to remain accessible, to understand the challenges facing different communities, and to speak up for the interests of the constituency.

His constituency work covers areas that directly affect people’s lives, including education, healthcare, agriculture, community development, youth opportunities and basic infrastructure. The aim is straightforward: to ensure that the people of Yabo and Shagari feel represented and remembered.

03 — Presence

Staying close to the community

Good representation begins with listening.

Whether meeting community leaders, speaking with young people, visiting project sites, engaging farmers, or hearing directly from families about the challenges they face, Hon. Umar Yusuf Yabo believes that the best understanding of a constituency comes from being present and paying attention to its people.

There is still work to be done, and he recognises that development does not happen overnight. His commitment is to keep working, keep listening, and keep using the opportunity given to him to serve.

04 — Service

Working for Yabo and Shagari

The people of Yabo and Shagari are at the heart of Hon. Umar Yusuf Yabo’s public service.

His focus is on practical representation and on supporting efforts that can improve everyday life across the constituency. Every project, intervention, legislative effort and community engagement is part of a wider responsibility to the people who placed their trust in him.

For Hon. Umar Yusuf Yabo, leadership is not about being distant from the people. It is about being present, understanding their needs, and doing the work that comes with the responsibility of representing them.

The work continues. The commitment remains to the people of Yabo and Shagari.

Electoral and legal history

A constituency seat settled in court

The Yabo/Shagari seat has a contested electoral history. The sequence below is taken from contemporaneous reporting, not from any single account.

  1. February – March 2023

    Election declared, then disputed

Daily Trust reported on 28 February 2023 that the PDP won a reps seat in Sokoto as INEC declared other National Assembly polls inconclusive. ThisDay reported on 2 March 2023 that a 37-year-old PDP candidate emerged winner of the Yabo-Shagari Federal Constituency seat. The result was challenged.

  2. February 2024

    Rerun won

Channels Television reported on 4 February 2024 that PDP’s Yusuf won the Yabo/Shagari Federal Constituency rerun. INEC had published the polling units for the rerun before the vote.

  3. 15 July 2024

Presidential election tribunal sacks the member

Multiple outlets — Vanguard, Channels Television, Daily Trust, Naija News, New Telegraph, Legit News and TheNigeriaLawyer — reported the same day that the tribunal sacked the member for Yabo/Shagari and ordered INEC to conduct a rerun within 90 days. Daily Trust later noted an appeal court set aside that judgment.

  4. 23 – 24 August 2024

    Court of Appeal affirms

Vanguard reported on 24 August 2024 that the appeal court affirmed Umar Yusuf Yabo as the member for the constituency. Channels Television reported his reaction the same day.

  5. 9 – 10 May 2026

Nomination forms presented under the ADC

The DEFENDER reported on 10 May 2026 that he formally presented his Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms under the African Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections, after a rally across Yabo and Shagari communities. The change of party had already been recorded by Legis360 and LeaderBox, which describe the move as a defection from the Peoples Democratic Party, under which he was first returned in 2023.

The primary document is in the archive. Two documents published on the member’s own page, both dated 12 March 2026 and on the letterhead of the House of Representatives, establish this as a documented fact rather than a report: a letter of resignation of membership from the Peoples Democratic Party addressed to the Chairman, and a notice of resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party and defection to the African Democratic Congress which cites Section 39(1)(c) of the 1999 Constitution as amended and refers to “the good people of Yabo-Shagari Federal Constituency”. The second bears a received stamp of the Office of the Speaker, House of Representatives, dated 12 March 2026. Both are signed Hon. Umar Yusuf Yabo, Dan Majen Yabo.

An ADC membership card is also on file, card number SO-YAB-YA-12096105, state Sokoto, local government area Yabo, ward Yabo X. The card prints the name as Umar Yusuf Yusuf, which is reproduced unaltered rather than silently corrected; the Office may wish to have the card reissued.

  6. 27 September 2026

    Operation Light the Village announced

An initiative to take electricity to unserved village communities, published under the hashtag #OperationLightTheVillage on both the official Facebook Page and the personal profile on the same day. It is the most recent documented activity in the record, and the only initiative announced through the office’s own channels rather than reported by the press. Details of participating communities, village counts and funding are not yet published and are not invented here.

Documented approach

In his own words

Statements below are quoted from published reporting. They show how the office frames its work; they are not independent verification of outcomes.

“As their representative, I am always in contact with my people to know their problems. So all the projects executed were based on the needs of those communities.”
Daily Trust, 20 December 2024 — on the 2024 constituency projects
“Despite the fact that I am elected under the banner of PDP, I was not voted by members of PDP alone… That is why I don’t use politics in supporting my people, because I am representing the entire people of Yabo-Shagari Federal Constituency.”
Daily Trust, 22 December 2024 — on the equipment distribution
“Our people are predominantly farmers, and agriculture remains the backbone of our local economy. By providing these inputs free of charge, we are not only supporting their livelihoods but also contributing to the fight against poverty and food insecurity.”
Daily Trust, 27 July 2025 — on farm inputs to 2,800 farmers
